Abstract
This study examined the impact of cultural adaptation stress on mental health, drinking problems, and emotional regulation competency for Vietnamese students living in Korea. A total of 316 Vietnamese students were asked to complete the Acculturative Stress Scale for International Student (ASSIS), Symptom Check List-90-Revised (SCL-90-R), Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT), and Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS). The data analyses included the frequency test, reliability test, correlation test, and hierarchical regression test and were conducted using the SPSS Statistics 22.0 program The findings revealed that the moderating role of emotional regulation competency in mental health and drinking problems varies as functions of cultural adaption stress. This result suggests that high level of emotional control competency may buffer the negative impact of cultural adaption stress on mental health and drinking problems. Implications for future research are discussed.
